The Baltimore Chapter of the AMA has developed three scholarships to contribute to the educational development of motivated students in the field of marketing in the region. These merit scholarships offer a quality opportunity for marketing students to become familiar with the American Marketing Association and its resources - at both the national and local level.
All applicants for the 2008 Undergraduate Marketing Education Merit Scholarships must be a full-time student attending a 4-year College or University in Maryland, with credits equivalent to the status of a junior or senior as of September 2007. The $2,500 first place award and two $500 Book Scholarship runner-up awards will be disbursed through the Financial Aid Offices of the recipients’ schools, to be used for payment toward tuition, books or other school supplies during the 2007-2008 school year.
The application deadline for the 2008 Marketing Education Merit Scholarship Awards is November 27, 2007. Click Here to download an application. For more information, contact Stacy Correll at 410-884-6142.
Annual Student Job Workshop
The Annual Student Job Workshop hosted by the Baltimore Chapter of the AMA offers undergraduate and graduate college students the leading edge on an education in marketing and/or related major, career paths and current positions in the Baltimore area. Students engage in one-on-one interaction and small group discussion with Baltimore marketing professionals to learn the ins-and-outs of a career or internship in marketing.
Former student and employer participants alike have success stories about the coveted internships/jobs they’ve found and the valuable employees they’ve hired. A 2003 graduate of Penn State University commented on the workshop, “Attending the Student Job Workshop two years in a row, gave me the opportunity to interact with people in the industry, as they shared their experiences and advice in a personal setting. Through the contacts I made, I was able to land my dream job just four months out of college.”
The 15th Annual Student Job Workshop was held on April 14, 2007 from 1:00-5:00pm at Loyola College's Timonium campus. 55 undergraduate and graduate students representing colleges and universities in the Mid-Atlantic region attended the event. All proceeds from the Student Job Workshop benefit the Baltimore Chapter of the American Marketing Association’s Marketing Education Scholarship Awards presented annually to recognize three students for his/her established marketing excellence.
Monthly Dinner Meetings and Networking Opportunities
Where can you find local marketers to network with every month? At the Baltimore AMA’s monthly dinner meetings, of course. For a low student-only fee, you can meet and talk to these executives to gain valuable networking experience and event an internship or entry-level job.
Dinner meetings are scheduled on weekday nights, once a month, between September and May. View the Events page of this Web site to see a listing of upcoming Chapter events (usually available online by mid-August each year).
Informational Interviews with Local Marketers
What do you want to be when you grow up? You may be wondering this, or others may be asking you what you plan to do with your marketing degree. We can help you find the answer! Below, you will find the titles of many local marketers who were willing to provide answers to questions, including what their typical day is like, how they got to their current position and what tips they’d give students on landing a job or internship. We’ve covered almost every functional area of marketing - communications, public relations, research, advertising, sales - and quite a range of industries. We hope this resource will help you gain insight into what these marketing professionals do, help you hone in on the field or industry that interests you and help you prepare for an interview in a similar industry or for a specific job.
"These interviews really helped me understand the types of marketing positions and responsibilities I might have with each when I graduate,” said a junior majoring in marketing. “Thank you so much for sending them to me.”
Take a look at the titles below. If any interest you, email us at interviews@amabaltimore.org and request the Word file that contains them all. Then, let us know what you think about these interviews by sending an email to the same address above.

Speakers Bureau
So you’d like to bring a touch of the “real world” to your college? As long as you have a group of at least 15 students and your college is in the Baltimore vicinity, we can probably help. The Baltimore AMA’s Speakers Bureau is another student resource we provide. If you’re looking for an executive who is willing to come to your campus and tell you about their job and its challenges, let us know. We have people willing to speak on market research, marketing management, nonprofit marketing, advertising, personal selling and more. Just send an e-mail to speakers@amabaltimore.org that contains your e-mail address, phone number and specific request and we’ll work to match an executive to your request.
- Promote the speaker again to your group via email, 2 weeks prior to the event and ask for “confirmations.”
- Email or call to remind/reconfirm attendance one week prior to the event.
- Confirm the location/date/time and AV equipment needed with the speaker 2 weeks prior to the engagement date and send them a campus map with the building and room
- number marked and a parking pass with parking areas well identified.
- Make sure the speaker is aware of his/her audience (i.e. marketing club members, P.R. society members, advertising seniors).
- Ask for the speaker’s business card upon arrival so that you can mail a typed thank you note following the talk.
- Provide the speaker with a small token of your appreciation (campus mug, pen, etc.) when their presentation is done. It’s the thought, not the value of the item, that counts.
If for any reason you suspect that you won’t have at least 15 students attending, it is strongly suggested that you contact the AMA member who secured your speaker or contact the speaker directly to explain your attendance concern and to reschedule the talk. There have been instances in the past years where AMA speakers have traveled to campuses and, upon arrival, found they were presenting to an audience of only 5 or 10 students, when originally told 30-60.
Marketing Excellence Endowment Fund
The Marketing Excellence Endowment Fund encourages excellence in education and practice in the marketing field. The goal of the Fund is to use the interest earnings to offer scholarships and awards to qualified and deserving marketing students and practitioners. In 1996, the Endowment awarded its first Undergraduate Marketing Education Scholarship for $1,000. Now, eight years later, our scholarship award has doubled, but our Endowment Fund has not.
Donations for the Fund support marketing students and educators in Maryland. If you would like to make a donation to the Marketing Education Endowment Fund please contact Leslie Kendrick at kendrick@ams.jhu.edu.
